Fitness Rant

I was recently reading one of the magazine sections of the local Sunday paper. In it was an article about "fitness makeover plans." Naturally this caught my eye so I read the article.

The article focused on three people with different health issues and their fitness goals. Now nothing frosts me more than namby-pamby fitness advice. This advice was dished out by 4 "experts" in the medical field, all of whom looked as though they needed to drop about 25 pounds judging from the headshots that accompanied their bios.

The first guy has terrible eating habits out of control portions and is at risk for heart disease and sits at a desk all day. His goal is a walking program. A WALKING PROGRAM? What he needs (besides a slap in the head) is to be doing some strength training to build some muscle and burn off some fat along with his walking. He makes it sound like he has no control of the food he shovels into his face each day. Personal responsibility folks.

Next up is the classic "I don't have time to exercise" woman. Her goal is to get more out of her program. Here's a quote, "I go to the gym twice a week for 30 minutes of exercise, but it's not really making a difference. I'm not doing any strength training. I'm just doing the bare minimum. I used to walk a lot but I don't anymore." Well DUH no wonder her program is not working. In 30 minutes twice a week I could get her awesome results. So what do the "experts" recommend? Break up the cardio into smaller chunks on different machines. Oh brother don't even get me going on that one. Adding 15 minutes of strength training-and they say-before OR AFTER cardio. Big mistake. Never do your cardio first. Warm up but don't do your full cardio session and then lift. What she should be doing is a high intensity strength training circuit followed by interval training to get her awesome results in minimal time.

Lastly a yo-yo exerciser. This one killed me. She has good results from exercise in the past but stops doing it and gains back all the weight. She wants a "jazzier routine" So what brilliant advice do they provide? Do a 45-minute "toning" tape with light weights. ARRGH. Now this brainstorm came from a sports-medicine specialist! What crap. TONING is a myth. You are either adding muscle or you are not. It's that simple. Women need to get over the fear of lifting weights. The only way to have any impact on your shape and metabolism is to lift weights. They need to be challenging, not light toning! If by jazzy she means something to keep her interested, then that's what a professionally designed program can do.

I'll end my rant here. Just remember, you need to work hard-not long. Watch what you eat, and take responsibility for your body. It's the only one you get, make the most of it.

The regular edition of the newsletter will return next month.
